Reiki: A Gentle Practice for Energy, Balance & Renewal
Updated: Aug 31
In a world that often asks us to move faster, do more, and carry more than we were ever meant to hold, creating space to slow down and reconnect with ourselves can be deeply restorative.
Reiki is a gentle energy-based practice that invites relaxation, balance, and a deeper connection with the self.
At Ash & Oak Revival, we view Reiki as a supportive practice for those seeking to reconnect with their body, quiet the mind, and create space for renewal.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy practice developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. The word Reiki is commonly translated as “universal life force energy.”
The practice is based on the idea that life-force energy flows through all living things. When we feel depleted, overwhelmed, disconnected, or emotionally burdened, Reiki is traditionally used to support energetic balance and harmony.
During a Reiki session, a practitioner uses a series of gentle hand positions either lightly touching the body or held just above it. The recipient remains fully clothed and typically lies comfortably on a treatment table or sits in a relaxed position.
There is no need to force anything, achieve anything, or “do” anything during a session.
You simply allow yourself to receive.
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
Every person's experience with Reiki is different.
Some people experience warmth, tingling, lightness, heaviness, or subtle sensations throughout the body. Others may experience vivid imagery, emotions, memories, colors, or a deep sense of relaxation.
And sometimes, nothing particularly dramatic happens. That doesn't mean the experience wasn't meaningful.
This can be an opportunity to simply pause - to step away from the noise of everyday life and give yourself permission to rest.
Many people describe feeling calmer, more centered, peaceful, or grounded after a session.
Reiki & the Energy Body
Many spiritual and energetic traditions recognize the body as more than its physical form. Within these traditions, we are understood to have an energetic system that interacts with our physical, emotional, and spiritual experiences.
Reiki practitioners work with this subtle energy to support balance, relaxation, and a sense of energetic harmony. Rather than focusing on forcing energy into a particular place, Reiki is often approached as a practice of allowing. The practitioner creates a supportive space while the recipient's experience unfolds naturally.
What Can Reiki Support?
People seek out Reiki for many different reasons.
A session may be used as a complementary wellness practice to support:
Relaxation and stress reduction
A greater sense of calm
Emotional grounding
Mindfulness and self-awareness
Rest and rejuvenation
Spiritual connection
Personal reflection
Reconnecting with the body
Creating space during periods of transition or change
What Happens During a Reiki Session?
A Reiki session is generally quiet and gentle. You remain fully clothed while getting comfortable in a peaceful environment. Your practitioner begins by creating an intention for the session and inviting you to settle into your breath and body.
The practitioner then works through a series of hand positions, either with gentle touch or with the hands held above the body. There is no requirement to meditate or clear your mind. If thoughts arise, allow them to come and go. If emotions surface, you can acknowledge them without needing to understand or change them. The invitation is simply to be present.
After the session, you may take some time to slowly transition back into your day and reflect on anything you noticed.
Reiki Doesn't Have to Look or Feel a Certain Way
One of the most important things to understand about Reiki is that there isn't a “right” way to experience it. You don't need to see energy, feel tingling or have an emotional release. You don't need to experience visions or receive a profound spiritual message.
Your experience is your own.
Reiki as a Practice of Returning
At Ash & Oak Revival, our work is rooted in the belief that many of us become disconnected from ourselves through the demands, expectations, and noise of modern life.
We learn to live from our minds instead of our bodies.
We learn to push through exhaustion.
We learn to ignore our intuition.
We learn to take care of everyone else before ourselves.
Reiki is a gentle doorway back toward yourself.
A moment to listen.
A moment to breathe.
A moment to remember what it feels like to simply be.
It isn't about becoming someone different.
It is about creating enough stillness to reconnect with who you already are.
Is Reiki Right for You?
Reiki may be worth exploring if you feel drawn toward gentle, restorative practices and want to create more intentional space for yourself.
You don't have to subscribe to a particular spiritual belief system to experience a Reiki session. You can approach it simply as a quiet opportunity for relaxation, reflection, and connection.
Come with curiosity rather than expectation. You don't have to know what you're looking for. Sometimes, simply creating space is enough to begin.
Return to Yourself
The world will always ask you to keep moving. Reiki offers an invitation to pause.
To breathe.
To listen.
To soften.
And perhaps, for a little while, to come home to yourself.
Ash & Oak Revival offers Reiki as part of our holistic approach to connection, healing, and personal renewal. Each session is intuitively guided and tailored to meet you where you are on your journey.
If you feel called to explore Reiki, we invite you to begin with an open mind, a curious heart, and no expectation of what your experience should be.
Sometimes healing begins with simply giving yourself permission to stop and receive.
